Call for Singers
On Good Friday, I am putting together a scratch choir to perform 'Requiem for the Subways', commemorating the imminent destruction of the locally cherished pedestrian underpasses at Elephant and Castle. It will be performed at dusk in promenade, taking in a complete circuit of the colourful and storied tunnel system, a capillary network for local residents, students, commuters and confused tourists since 1959.
The tunnels are to close permanently as part of a huge TfL remodelling project which will install new cycle lanes, introduce 2-way traffic and put the pedestrians above ground. 'Requiem for the Subways' will draw inspiration from the local history and famous residents depicted in the tunnel's dazzling array of murals.
I'm putting together a fine cadre of professional and ameteur singers to perform this work. It will be in 7 miniature movements, each built around sparse and simple musical ideas and utilising the various spatial features afforded by the different tunnels.
I'd love to get a good-sized choir together for this gig to make it a really special event, so if you can spare a couple of hours of your bank holiday to take part I'd be delighted to hear from you. The music will be available a couple of days in advance.
